*Uncle – in Korean culture, children of same-generation friends etc will call you uncle, since the children are not of the same generation, but a younger generation. The term “uncle” does NOT mean that these children are indeed blood-related nieces and nephews. Therefore, in this case, Byul is NOT Yunho’s real niece, just that he is addressing himself as someone of a different generation whom the child should properly call uncle (not blood-related).

**Byul means “star” in Korean, so Yunho is making a reference to her name. The name “Byul” is also commonly only used for a girl’s name only, hence the child is a girl and hence a niece, not a nephew.

***Yunho switched from calling himself “Uncle” at first to “Oppa” later. While as explained above, usually children of different generation should address him as “uncle”, we all know how we don’t like to feel old by being called “uncles / aunties” and sometimes want to be called big brother / sister instead haha. Because Byul is not Yunho’s blood-related niece (and would hence have to strictly address him as “uncle” only), calling him “oppa” is also workable haha. Also, the use of the word “oppa” implies that the child is a girl, since Korean subject particles are gender-specific. Only females can call older males “oppa”. Hence, Byul would be a “niece”, not a nephew.
