TVXQ Talks About Staying Together As Duo For 15 Years + What The Group Means To Them

As TVXQ approaches their 15th anniversary as a group, the two members opened up about their time together and how they had managed to stay together as a duo.

At the comeback showcase for their latest album “New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love” on March 28, Changmin and Yunho discussed what TVXQ meant to each of them.

Changmin remarked, “It wasn’t my dream to become a singer. But when they asked me to dance during my audition, and all I did was clap my hands to the beat, and I passed—I sensed at that moment that this was my destiny.”

“I didn’t go against my destiny, and I’m still working as a singer,” he went on. “I’m thankful for my destiny and consider it incredibly precious, because it’s a job that allows me to share positive emotions with many people. I’m glad that I was able to make many fans happy through that destiny, and I plan to continue with it.”

Yunho commented, “I think we’re past the point where it’s enough to say, ‘I’m a member of TVXQ.’ If you include our training period, I’ve spent more than half my life [with TVXQ]. I want to call it my home.”

When asked about the secret to staying together for 15 years, Yunho replied, “While it’s true that Changmin and I have different personalities, our values are the same. When I look at Changmin, I feel as though I’m looking into a mirror. Sometimes I see myself, sometimes I see something that I realize I should learn from him, and I feel that we need to move forward together.”

He continued, “Of course I occasionally get upset with him, but it’s not easy for someone to remain quietly and steadfastly by one’s side. As a friend with whom I’ve shared that kind of relationship up until now, I am very grateful for him.”

The two idols also talked about the difference between TVXQ in their twenties and TVXQ in their thirties. “If we have to express it in terms of colors,” said Yunho, “I think our color during our twenties was red. But while preparing this album, I think our color became white. I think we’ve developed the know-how to absorb many different colors like red, blue, and purple with white as a foundation.”

TVXQ is currently topping iTunes charts all across the globe with their latest album. The group is also preparing for their “TVXQ! Welcome Back Party: The Chance of Love” concert, which will be held at the Jamsil Sports Complex in Seoul on May 5 and 6.

TVXQ Shares Stories From Comeback Preparations And Reactions To Their Appearance On “I Live Alone”

On March 28, TVXQ held their showcase “TVXQ! Welcome Back Party: The Chance of Love,” which was also broadcast on Naver’s V Live.

TVXQ released their eighth album “New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love” on March 28, two years and eight months after their last album in 2015. The group opened the showcase with “Love Line” and continued the event with more performances and interviews.

MC Park Ji Sun commented on TVXQ’s recent appearance on MBC’s “I Live Alone” and asked about the reactions of people around them. Yunho replied, “People said that it was nice because my personality was seen favorably by others, but I did hear that it was too much to be turning my music video on in the morning. That’s how much I love myself.”

Changmin added, “I received lots of questions about whether or not I really receive lessons like that. I usually split up my time and do it, but since I did it all in one day, I think it appeared that way. I usually divide them up.”

TVXQ introduced their newest album which consists of 11 tracks. One of them was composed and written by Changmin who said, “I told Yunho, ‘You have to sing it well.’” In response, Yunho said that he recorded it with more heart and soul than any other track.

He continued, “While singing ‘Love Line,’ Changmin said, ‘This needs to be the first track.’ I was thinking the same thing and thought, ‘Changmin and I are on the same wavelength.’”

Changmin said, “As a whole, the b-side tracks have a more relaxed feeling to them than the previous songs TVXQ used to perform. I think we worked on those types of songs to be relaxed and more approachable.”

Yunho also shared a story from filming their MV. He said, “When filming scenes where we turned around wearing long clothes or our jackets were flying, the staff held up a fan and blew strong wind at us. Every time the director told us to move with more passion, the staff member also had to move with more passion while blowing the wind. I felt sorry thinking about how hard it must’ve been for the staff. Later, the staff member’s pants ripped at the knees.”

Before performing their title track “The Chance of Love,” TVXQ said, “It’s not just a song about a man and a woman, but the lyrics reflect our destiny that we met as TVXQ and us wanting to continue that for a long time.”

At the comeback showcase for their latest album “New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love” on March 28, Yunho mentioned that he was famous for doling out a lot of advice to younger idols. He remarked, “[SHINee’s] Taemin contacted me during his promotions for ‘MOVE‘ to ask me what I thought, which I was grateful for. I also praised NCT for their great energy during their first comeback stage.”

Yunho then elaborated on what kind of advice he typically gives to younger artists. “I tell them that if they start to slack off on stage, it’ll show,” he said. “The audience will know.”

He went on, “I tell them that their offstage image is important, too.”

When asked about the countless records TVXQ has set over the years, Yunho humbly replied, “We were very lucky.” Changmin chimed in, “I try not to worry too much about [setting records],” before adding jokingly, “I don’t want all of [our records] to be broken. Please let us keep about two of them.”

Yunho then shared one last piece of advice for junior idols, saying, “I advise them that what’s cool is to keep going for a long time [as a group].”
